Music Instruction
Blue Ridge Music is proud to host a staff of seasoned musicians that have chosen to devote much of their time to teaching others to play and enjoy music. We have teachers that cover guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and bass. Our teachers all have years of exprience and are able to give students the instruction they need to play most any style they wish to play. Each instructor is patient and comprehensive, and can tailor their instruction to fit the needs of each individual student. Typically, our instructors teach one-on-one private lessons once a week for 30 minutes per session. In this 30-minute session, the instructor can typically give the student plenty of material to work on at home for an entire week until the next lesson. Lessons are generally held in a private studio room, so distractions are kept at an absolute minimum. Our instructors have students ranging from 5 years old to 75. It's never to late to learn, or decide to pick up a new instrument or style!
Weekly Open Jam
Now that you've taken some lessons and learned some chords and melodies, it's time to put those skills to use! Every Monday evening from 6:30 till 8:30, Blue Ridge Music hosts an open jam. The jam is open to anyone who wants to come. Whether you're a hot picker from Nashville or just a toe-tapper from down the street, you are welcome to come and enjoy the fun. The jam is set up downstairs in a large open room, with rows of folding chairs all facing the front. At the front of the room there is a small stage with a few microphones and a modest PA system. Bobby kicks the jam off by leading the group in a song, with a few musicians on stage and every musician in the room picking along. The jam then moves around the room in a round-robin fashion, with everyone having an opportunity to come up front and lead a song. It's purely voluntary, and there is no pressure. If you're sitting next to a really good mandolin player or there's a fiddle player across the room you like, just ask them to come up with you and be your band! Everyone is a good sport and has a great time. This is a great place to meet people to play with and learn new songs. The Blue Ridge Music jam has produced several bands over the years and has been a place where people form long-lasting friendships with their fellow jammers.
